The ThreeEight fonts are the interim output from an ongoing design research project being carried out in collaboration with Paul McNeil in the Faculty of Design at the London College of Communication. The project was initiated to explore the possibilities for creating geometric letterforms which can be read at small text sizes in print. The project tested a series of optical and form-based interventions which would compensate for some of the inherent limitations of geometric letterform design, where the lack of stroke width modulation and crude stroke junctions run counter to optical principles in conventional letterform design. The project has developed into a system of six fonts in eight weights which will be published as ‘ThreeSix’ in Spring 2010

Developed with Dalton Maag, Tephra is a type family based on the lower-case ‘interact’ font designed at 8vo in 1994. The original type has been extended and updated to a set of six fonts: Tephra 0; Tephra 12; Tephra 50; Tephra 100; Tephra 138; Tephra 250
